From boutique dispensaries to vape shops, the popularity of delta-8 is on the rise. But with this increase in popularity also comes a mountain of myths and misconceptions. This leaves many uncertain about whether the cannabinoid is suitable for their wellness needs – or safe for use at all. Kick misconceptions to the curb and learn more about the often misunderstood delta THC!

Myth #1: Delta THC Is Dangerous

Delta THC gained a reputation for being unsafe or even dangerous to use. This is primarily due to a lack of knowledge and unfamiliarity with the cannabinoid. So, is it safe? Yes, and no. There’s been little research done on the safety of delta-8.

With that said, it’s unlikely to pose serious danger to responsible adults if their delta-8 gummies and other products were produced safely.

The delta-8/hemp market is not regulated. This means products could potentially be contaminated with pesticides and heavy metals. Plus, the chemicals used to produce delta-8 can also be harmful if they’re not removed before they’re made available.

You should always procure delta-8 carts and products from a trusted source that tests their products via a third party to minimize risks.

Myth #2: All THC is the Same

Delta-8 and delta-9 are very similar, but not the same. The molecular structure of the two cannabinoids is almost identical; the only difference is the placement of a double bond. They’re also both forms of THC. But that’s where the similarities end.

Remember that double bond placement? It makes a monumental impact on how they interact with the receptors in our endocannabinoid systems. Delta-9 binds to CB1 receptors. It’s known for producing the intense high that’s commonly associated with THC. Delta-8, on the other hand, prefers CB2 receptors. It delivers more relaxing or uplifting effects. It’s also much less potent than delta-9 THC, which is why it’s been nicknamed “weed light” and “diet weed.”

One study also suggests that delta-8 THC may produce much of the same results as delta-9 THC with fewer adverse effects, such as paranoia and anxiety. However, more research must be completed to substantiate these findings.

Myth #3: Delta-8 is Fake THC

It is a huge misconception that delta-8 THC is a fake or man-made cannabinoid. This is not true! Delta-8 actually does occur naturally in the cannabis plant, albeit in small amounts. However, since it occurs in such small quantities, most commercial delta-8 is synthesized or extracted through a conversion process that converts hemp-derived CBD into delta-8. Though less potent than delta-9 THC and lab-synthesized, it is THC!

Myth #4: Delta-8 THC Isn’t Psychoactive

The mild effects of delta-8 have led many to believe the cannabinoid isn’t psychoactive. But delta-8 is still a psychoactive compound. Sure, it’s associated with relaxation and stress relief, but it’s also known for its euphoric feeling a.k.a. the high related to THC.

It’s true that some may not experience any significant effects from delta-8. This is because THC – any THC – can affect everyone differently. It can vary depending on a range of factors, including:

  • Age

  • Weight

  • Metabolism

  • Strain

  • Tolerance/Frequency of Use

  • Consumption Method (vaping, edibles, smoking, etc.)

Myth #5: Delta-8 is a New Cannabinoid

Delta-8 is fairly new to the market, so it must be a recent find, right? Wrong! There was a study published by Roger Adams and his colleagues at the University of Illinois about the partial synthesis of delta-8 way back in 1941! It was then fully synthesized years later in 1965.

Why is it only hitting consumers now? It’s most likely due to the legalization of industrial hemp in 2018. Suppliers began seeking how they could utilize the newly legal plant and appeal to their consumer base. This mostly led to various CBD products. But many expanded, using research from decades prior to produce delta-8.

The Ins and Outs of Delta THC

Myths and misconceptions have obscured the truth about delta-8’s effects, potential advantages, and even what it is. This has only worsened as it continues to rise in popularity. Education is more important than ever, especially for prospective delta-8 consumers. Make decisions based on facts, not myths, by seeking out reputable sources. Only then can you determine whether delta-8 is right for you!
